Understanding Cloud Computing
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing refers to the delivery of on-demand computing services over the internet on a pay-as-you-go basis. Rather than managing files and devices on a local storage device, cloud computing makes it possible to save them over the internet.
Why are businesses choosing Cloud Computing?
In 2020, 61% of businesses migrated their workloads to the cloud (partly driven by the pandemic).
Advantages:
Scale up = Pay more
Scale down = Pay less
No server space required
Better data security
Automatic software updates
Topology Custom Hierarchy
Problem
We provide data center, campus, and cloud hierarchies, but customer networks don’t always conform to these arrangements. There’s a wide range of networks out there, and if we want to support a large portion of them, we will need to allow user customization.
Users are limited to hierarchies that may not fit their network.
Users can't customize the order of devices within one container.
Users typically don’t understand the possibilities offered by built-in hierarchies.
GOAL: Provide users with the most flexible way to customize their topology network with a simple and intuitive design.
Outcomes
Phase 1: Conducted primary research with Arista’s customers. Gathered valuable insights that guide topology custom hierarchy design.
Phase 2: Conducted competitive analysis of existing cloud computing platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Nectus, etc). Evaluated competitors' ways of solving the customization problem of topology. After evaluation, delivered a research report to the team.
Phase 3: Conducted usability testing with 7 participants, and incorporated their feedback into the final mockups. Delivered the usability testing document, high-fidelity mockups, a functional prototype, and design specifications for engineers.
